What To Do When the Heat Goes Out

Call it Murphy’s Law, or maybe just a little bad luck, but we sometimes see heat pump issues in Manassas during the winter time, when they’re necessary to keep you warm. While you know the team at Air-Right Energy Design, Inc. will constantly be there ASAP when you need us for a heat pump repair, there are some things you can do to ensure a repair is important and save yourself some money if it’s not. We’ve gathered this checklist of things to test before you give us a call.

  1. It may sound silly, but make sure everything is set to “on”. We’ve been to more than a few calls only to find the thermostat or the heat pump itself is switched off.
    • Look at your thermostat to ensure it’s on, switched to the proper temperature and isn’t set to cool.
    • Then try replacing the battery, if it has one.
    • If everything looks correct, check your furnace switch (check your manual if you’re not sure where it is) and test your fuses and circuit breaker.
    • Confirm that your gas is on.
  2. If the furnace still hasn’t turned on, return to your thermostat.
    • If it’s a programmable model, confirm that it’s displaying the correct time. If it thinks it’s morning when it’s in fact night, it may not kick your heat on because it doesn’t know you’re home.
  3. Is a blockage causing your furnace to breakdown?
    • Inspect your air filters to ensure they’re not jamming things up.
    • Do you have any blocked ducts, vents or cool air openings?
    • Are all supply registers accessible?
    • Is your exhaust flue unobstructed?

If you’ve moved through this checklist and you’re still lacking heat, call Air-Right Energy Design, Inc. at 703-260-1148 or set up an appointment online and we’ll get your home back to the welcoming and cozy place it should be.
