What To Do When the Heat Goes Out

Call it Murphy’s Law, or maybe just a little misfortune, but we sometimes see heat pump issues in Manassas during the winter time, when they’re necessary to keep you warm. While you know the team at Air-Right Energy Design, Inc. will constantly be there ASAP when you need us for a heat pump repair, there are some things you can do to ensure a repair is important and save yourself some cash if it’s not. We’ve gathered this checklist of things to test before you give us a call.

  1. It may sound strange, but make sure everything is set to “on”. We’ve been to more than a few calls only to find the thermostat or the heat pump itself is switched off.
    • Look at your thermostat to make sure it’s on, switched to the proper temperature and isn’t switched to cool.
    • Then try swapping out the battery, if it has one.
    • If everything looks correct, check your furnace switch (check your manual if you’re not sure where it is) and test your fuses and circuit breaker.
    • Confirm that your gas is on.
  2. If the furnace still hasn’t turned on, go back to your thermostat.
    • If it’s a programmable model, make sure it’s showing the proper time. If it thinks it’s morning when it’s in fact night, it may not kick your heat on because it doesn’t think you’re home.
  3. Is an obstruction causing your furnace to breakdown?
    • Inspect your air filters to ensure they’re not jamming things up.
    • Do you have any congested ducts, vents or cool air openings?
    • Are all supply registers open?
    • Is your exhaust flue unobstructed?

If you’ve moved through this checklist and you’re still lacking heat, call Air-Right Energy Design, Inc. at 703-260-1148 or schedule an appointment online and we’ll get your home back to the welcoming and cozy place it should be.
