Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Manassas just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work correctly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area regularly to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have piled up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Manassas will more than likely swing up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Air-Right Energy Design, Inc. in Manassas, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re related to air conditioner service or buying a new system.
