Why you should replace your air filter this winter

We encourage preventative maintenance on your heating and cooling system frequently, but this doesn’t only mean ongoing tune-ups – it also means checking your air filters. It’s a quick way to help keep your system running smoothly and increase your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it on your own! Now is the best time to inspect your filter, as the cooler weather comes to a conclusion and summer is approaching. There are a lot of benefits to changing out your air filter, such as:

Lengthening the life and efficiency of your system
A guaranteed way to trigger a system failure is a dirty air filter. Additional dirt that gathers on your filter can influence your whole system to operate harder than it should to keep you cool. Not only will it hamper the performance of your system, but it can increase your utility bills and result in your system overheating.

Enhancing indoor air quality
The reason for an air filter is that it grabs contaminants through your air system before it enters your house. The older a filter gets, the less effective it is in catching things like dust and mold that can impact the health and comfort of your home, which is even more critical if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With increased temperatures coming up, pollen and mold are especially likely to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it circulating in your house. A quality, clean air filter will help your family breathe easy and keep healthy throughout allergy season.

Check your system or ask your HVAC technician for recommendations on how regularly you should be putting in a replacement filter. For many filters through Air-Right Energy Design, Inc., we advise an annual change with the highest MERV filter you have access to. Not sure if it’s the best time to change your air filter?
